Page Types
What is a page type?
Every page on your website is different, including text, links and other features needed to meet the goals of your target audience. While the content is different, many pages share a similar structure for things like the page title, navigation, and a section for content. Page types create consistency for visitors and simplify how you build the page. Page types may be very flexible, for example, a homepage. Others that need a more specific layout are more limiting, like a news article.
Think of page types as the rooms of a house. In every room, you’ll find common things like walls, doors, and lightswitches. In others, you find specific items, like the stove in the kitchen or a shower in the bathroom. Some rooms may be larger for more choices of furniture while smaller rooms are more limiting.
Benefits of page types
- Can be customized to meet the needs of your site using page components
- Automatically include consistent elements like page title, navigation, and breadcrumbs
- Provide both flexibility and standardization, depending on the needs of the page

Guidelines for creating content
Each page on your site should have a goal for a specific audience group to accomplish. The goal and audience will vary depending on the content you plan to feature. Choose a page type based on the purpose of your content and how it should be structured to help your audience achieve their goal. Before you create new content, consider:
- What is the goal of this page? What value does this page bring to your agency’s audiences? How will you measure whether the goal is achieved?
- Who is it for? Identify your agency’s audience.
- What do I want my audience to do on this page? Identify a specific action you want visitors to take, or a task visitors need to perform when they visit this page.
- Is this content published or maintained elsewhere? Don’t duplicate content from other sites on your site. Link to it from your site instead.
